IN LOVING MEMORY

SIMA BIRACH (1938~2025)

Visionary broadcaster, devoted family man, and proud immigrant success story, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2025, at the age of 86. His life was defined by courage, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in the power of radio to connect communities.

Born in the former Yugoslavia in 1938, Sima developed an early appreciation for culture, language, and storytelling. In 1965, he immigrated to the United States with determination and a deep sense of purpose. Like many immigrants, he arrived with little but ambition and a strong work ethic. What set him apart was his ability to see opportunity where others saw obstacles.

Sima’s journey in broadcasting began with ethnic radio programming designed to serve immigrant communities longing to hear the language, music, and news of home. Recognizing the profound need for culturally relevant media, he founded Birach Broadcasting Corporation, building it from the ground up into one of the largest independently owned radio broadcasting companies in the United States.

In 1985, he launched WNZK-AM in Detroit, a milestone that marked the formal beginning of his expanding broadcast network. Over the following decades, he acquired and operated numerous AM stations in major American cities, creating platforms that amplified multicultural voices often overlooked by mainstream media. His stations became trusted hubs for news, talk, and community dialogue — places where listeners felt heard and represented.

Sima was not simply a businessman; he was a pioneer who believed radio was more than a commercial enterprise. To him, it was a lifeline — a bridge between cultures, generations, and neighborhoods. Colleagues admired his sharp instincts and resilience in an industry that underwent dramatic technological and economic shifts. Through it all, he remained steadfast in his commitment to independent broadcasting.

Beyond his professional achievements, Sima was a man of deep faith and strong family values. He carried his heritage proudly and remained closely connected to his Serbian roots and church community. Funeral services were held at St. Lazarus Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, reflecting the spiritual foundation that guided his life.

He is survived by his loving children — Elizabeth Birach-Williams, Sima Birach Jr., and Alexandra Sasha Van Horn — as well as his cherished grandchildren, who brought him immense joy and pride. To his family, he was a source of wisdom, strength, and unwavering support.

Sima Birach’s legacy lives on not only in the stations he built, but in the communities he strengthened and the countless voices he gave a platform. His story stands as a testament to the American dream, to the enduring power of cultural identity, and to the simple yet profound belief that every community deserves to be heard.

He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever honored.
